Pre-K Adventure

Parents: Use coins to help your Pre-K kids learn math and money concepts:

  • “If I have 10 dimes and I give 5 to you, how many would I have left?”
  • “If you have 3 pennies and I have 3 pennies and we put them together, how many would there be?”

After they learn the basic concept of money, to complete the Adventure take them to the store and find 2 items that cost equal amounts. Have your child choose which of the items to purchase with the money. That’s a great way to start teaching them early on (without having to lecture) that ‘money’ can only be spent once and if we spend it on one thing it won’t be available to be spent on something else later on.

Basic Adventure

The way to be truly wealthy is to learn to SAVE and INVEST money.

Think about this:

  • If 2 kids each earn $100 and 1 spends the full $100 while the other one spends only half of it and saves the other half, who will have the most money?
  • In fact, if one kid makes a $100 and spends it all and the other kid only makes $50 but saves half of it, who will have the most money?

What we learn from this is that it’s not about HOW MUCH money you make, but how much money you SAVE!  So- you will want to start SAVING a percentage of everything you earn. In order to do that you will need to have a bank to save your money until you are ready to take it to the bank.

For this adventure you are going to design or decorate a bank or home banking system. You can use an empty box, bottle(s) or jar(s), or anything you can think of that you would like to work with. We recommend your system/bank has 4 different sections for:

  • GIVING (money you will give to charity- tithing to your church or a donation)
  • SAVING to invest in your future (money you will not be spending until much later in life!)
  • SAVING for something special (money you are saving for something you want as soon as you save enough)
  • SPENDING (money you can spend whenever needed)

Be creative and design something that is unique to you and will make you excited to SAVE your money. Once you have designed your bank USE IT!

  • First, determine what percentage you will be putting into each section (we recommend you give away 10%, save at least 15% for investing and 15% for something special). SUPERSavers will want to save even more while you are young and can!
  • Next- DO IT!  For the rest of the year every time you get some money save it in the appropriate section of your bank or system and watch your money start to grow!

Super Achiever Adventure

SUPERAchievers understand the importance of INVESTing. Just like a seed needs the right environment to grow (the right soil, water, and sunshine), your money needs to be in the right environment to grow as well.

The important thing to remember about saving is to START EARLY and BE CONSISTENT! Even if you are only saving a little each time you get money, it will add up over time and, if invested, will even grow and become LOTS more than it was! So keep saving until you have enough to start investing.

Of course, SUPERAchievers also know that you have to PLAN in order for things to happen the way you would like for them to happen, and then TRACK your progress. For this Adventure you will:

  • Make a plan with your parents for how much money you would like save by the end of the year,
  • Track your progress
  • Follow Wattsons’ Smart Money Tips for Kids! that will begin on October 1st. You can find them HERE.

Teen Adventure

The way to be truly wealthy is to learn to SAVE and INVEST money.

Think about this:

  • If 2 teens each earn $100 and 1 spends the full $100 while the other one spends only half of it and saves the other half, who will have the most money?
  • In fact, if one teen makes a $100 and spends it all and the other kid only makes $50 but saves half of it, who will have the most money?
