Family Safety Plan

#Vivint #MyDiscoveryDestination

Pre-K Adventure

With the help of your parents learn whatever is appropriate for your age:

  • your address,
  • mom and dad’s phone number,
  • parents’ name.

Also, as a family determine a code word to use if someone is feeling unsafe in a situation.

Basic Adventure

Complete the following safety activities:

  • Make sure you know your address,
  • MEMORIZE parents’ phone numbers,
  • MEMORIZE at least 2 emergency contact phone numbers, and
  • any other key information you and your parents determine you should have memorized.

As a family decide on these 3 key elements of a family safety plan:

  • A code word to use if ever you feel unsafe but can’t verbalize it in the situation,
  • A code word to identify anyone that has been asked to help in an emergency (a child does NOT go with someone unless a parent has given them the code word)
  • An emergency meeting place away from your home where you will meet if the home is not an option,
  • A relative in a distant city that everyone will check in with in the event of a local natural disaster. Be sure everyone has this phone memorized as well in case cell service is interrupted.

Super Achiever Adventure

SUPERAchievers will take additional steps to make sure the family is safe in a disaster:

  • Map your home for safety purposes identifying the doors and windows.
  • Make sure that all exits are clear.
  • Make sure that all doors and windows are secure from intruders.
  • With your parents help and permission check the fire alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Think through different scenarios–
    • if there were a fire in the family room where would you get out?
      • The kitchen?
      • Your bedroom?

Think through different scenarios and identify the best escape route. Then share it with your family.

If you want to be a SUPER DUPER Achiever you could even put together a 72-hour kit, or at least identify the things you would take with you if you had to evacuate your home quickly.
